Do You Like It?

We've added a Like link to most of the items on the site. It's located just under the title near the author name, the Bookmark link, and the Comment link. You can like (and un-like) items. This information helps us keep the site responsive and relevant. Don't worry, we don't publish the information about who likes things: we're just interested in what works well.

In order to avoid mischief and bots, the Like feature is only available to logged-in users.

And, in a few days, there will be a new Drupal Extra that explains how we've done this.

Exploring Modules: Nice Menus and Rotor Banner

Drupal ExtraThis is a case study of selecting two new modules for this site. It demonstrates the process involved as well as how Drupal's architecture takes a lot of the risk out of experimentation.

First of all, as I described in the book, there really is no substitute for a test site. It doesn't take much work to set it up, and the work itself is good practice for site maintenance that you'll need to do from time to time. For my own testing, I find it's easiest in many cases to wipe out the old test site and do a new install. Over time, I do occasional quick tweaks and tests to the test site, so when it's time to do some serious testing, getting rid of all of those makes life a bit easier.

Category Links

Thanks for bearing with us in the last few days. As you may have noticed, the links to category archives (taxonomies in Drupal terms) were functioning in a non-deterministic manner (i.e., erratically wrong). We think they're back.

This was traced to a rogue group of URL redirects which have now been banished from the site.

Let us know if you experience any problems.

New Theme

The theme du jour is AD Novus (http://drupal.org/project/ad_novus).

It's cleaner than the last one, with fewer regions on the page and a light background. Light backgrounds are so much cleaner and elegant...I'm sure that within a matter of months we'll all be noticing how clean and elegant the dark backgrounds on innovative web pages look. (Wide ties are coming back, too.)

Moving a Shared Hosting Site

If you're using shared hosting and have multiple domains on your site (Add-on Domains in the CPANEL world), be careful about moving. Some shared hosting services put all of your files including directories for subdomains in an htdocs folder (or some other name). Others place them in a www folder. Some do both, and sometimes the documentation reflects the fact that you can choose -- or it may simply be outdated.
