Here is major report from Pew about online socializing. A whopping total of 14% of respondents think the Internet not positive.
People are still skeptical, and many businesses and non profits (particularly in small towns) say that "our customers/clients/supporters" don't use the web, but that's becoming less socially acceptable. One nonprofit trustee approached me after a meeting this year in which I had give out a URL to let them download materials. This trustee said quietly to me afterwards, "I didn't want to say anything, but is there some other way I could get the material?" Like many of us, I had grown used to such remarks being made loudly in the middle of a meeting.
There's lots more to do--we still have to bring the enormous efficiency of Web-based communications to organizations with long traditions of older media ("if it was good enough for Gutenberg..."), but we're making progress and can get on with moving forward with our organizations' missions.
